Register with a GP

As the student population of St Andrews has a high turnover, the two Medical Practices in the town share the student population by Surname (Family Name).  We respectfully ask that you register with the Practice that covers your surname although you are free to register with any Practice that will accept you.

If you are a St Andrews University student living within the Practice boundary and your surname begins with:

  • Letters A to Nt

We invite you to register with Pipeland Medical Practice. To ensure you have health care when you need it, we would advise you to do this during matriculation at the start of first academic year, however please wait until you have arrived in St Andrews and have been given your actual room number in your halls of residence.

If your surname begins with Nu – Z contact Blackfriars Medical Practice on 01334 477477 or visit their website.

You will remain registered with us during your studies.  If you need medical assistance out with term time you can be seen at any Practice in the country as a Temporary Resident.  You cannot be registered with more than one Practice at a time.  Please do not be tempted to register fully with a Practice out with St Andrews during the University holidays as this will cause unnecessary confusion and delays to the continuity of your care.

If you take regular medication or have ongoing medical conditions we would encourage you to make a telephone appointment with one of the GPs.  We are unable to prescribe medication for you until you have done this.

All students are free to change from their allocated Practice at any time.
