ST1: OOH
In ST1 you must complete an induction and in addition 6 or more sessions equating to 36 hours. If you have not completed these sessions / hours in ST1 then you will be expected to carry these forward to ST3 – Click here for FAQs, Capability Mapping Guide and Learning Outcomes Grid. You are also required to keep a running total of the number of hours in the “Subject Title” section of the OOH Learning Log so that your Educational Supervisor and the ARCP panel can clearly see that you have accumulated the correct number of hours, as well as a Feedback Form after each session. OOH is slightly different to working during the day with slightly different challenges although not vastly different from a combination of daytime emergency on the day appointments and home visits – effectively dealing with slightly more acute problems or things that patients don’t feel can wait until their GP opens again.
You will likely get the offer to do OOH in Tayside or Fife. Fife is based in the Community Hospital – Minor injuries area. You will be most likely working with one of the GPs from the Practice – often Callum or Nick. Shifts are 6pm until midnight and you will be either based on the base seeing patients that are asked to come in via NHS24 or on the vehicle visiting people at home.
It is arguably a bit quieter in St Andrews although a large area is covered and you benefit from one to one support, and are working with a GP you know.
